AJ Lawing started the company in 1982. It is still his name on it and still the same gate.
How it grew
It began as a landscaping company: custom design and installation, plantings, irrigation and maintenance for houses and commercial properties around Gaston County. The supply yard followed, because a crew burning through mulch, soil and stone every week has to stock it somewhere.
Once it was stocked, people started buying it. Homeowners, then contractors, then everybody. Today the yard and the crew are two halves of the same business, and one keeps the other honest about what material is worth.
Who you get
A small operation, six people on the Better Business Bureau record, and the second generation is now driving the delivery truck. Customers write about Melissa on the phone and about Mac on the truck often enough that both names turn up in the reviews.
What comes up more than anything else is that a person answers. Someone born and raised in Gastonia wrote that he had known about AJ's for thirty years, used them for the first time last year, and the thing he singled out was that you don't get a recording.
The hay
In the cold months the yard hands out hay so people can bed animals down, and there is a run of dog houses in the reviews too. None of that is on a price list. It shows up because strangers keep writing about watching it happen.

I called this morning looking for prices on some mulch and expected to have to wait a few days for delivery. I spoke with Melissa and she helped me figure out how much I needed and quoted a very reasonable price and told me I could get it delivered in half an hour! Mac was soon in my driveway with a truckload of mulch. He drove that truck right up to my flower bed and dumped it right where I needed it.
I'm born and raised here, so I've known about AJ's for probably the last 30 years or more, but have never worked with them until now. They are awesome to work with. When you call them, you don't get a recording. They answer the phones and provide great insight and advice for the project.

Always great, the lady on the phone is always pleasant and soooo friendly, she is patient answering questions and helpful, the delivery guy is always friendly, he even dump my gravel in diff spots to make it easier to spread.
AJ will forever be my place and will always be the first place i recommend. I have begged my husband for years to fill an area in my garden with river rock. He was able to do that yesterday with the help of AJ's!
