Renovating an old bed
A bed that has run for decades is usually four things at once: original shrubs now the size of a car, a mulch layer six inches deep, a bed line that has crept out with every edging, and soil nobody has touched since the house was built.
The order that works is take the overgrown material out first, cut a fresh bed line, pull the mulch mat back down to two inches, till conditioner into what is left, then plant. Doing it in that order means the new plants go into soil rather than into a compost heap sitting on clay.

Lots around the square and out toward the college are generous, which means a truck can usually get to the back and a pile can go where the work is instead of on the drive. That saves more labor than any tool you can buy.

Often, if the gate is wide enough and the ground is dry. The driver will look before he commits, because a loaded truck on soft ground leaves ruts that outlast the job.
Double ground hardwood if you want it to knit and stay put, pine bark if you would rather not redo it every year. Neither one fixes a mat that is already too deep.
