Bessemer City thin soil, hard ground

About eight miles west of the yard, up against the ridge, where a shovel finds rock a lot sooner than most people expect.

Building up instead of digging down

Ground near the ridge runs shallow and stony, and a planting hole that hits rock at nine inches is common. Fighting that with a mattock is a long day. Building the bed up six or eight inches with topsoil and conditioner, and planting into the built bed, gets a better result in a fraction of the time.

A raised bed on this kind of ground also drains, which is the other half of the problem. Water that will not go down through rock sits in the hole, and a shrub in a hole full of water rots from the roots up.

  • Build the bed up rather than dig into rock
  • Topsoil and conditioner together, not soil alone
  • Six to eight inches is usually enough lift

Edging that holds on a slope

Yards that fall away toward the creeks lose mulch downhill every heavy rain. Steel edging set proud of the bed, or a low stacked stone course at the low side, stops the migration. Pine straw holds better than shredded bark on the same slope and costs less to top up.

I called this morning looking for prices on some mulch and expected to have to wait a few days for delivery. I spoke with Melissa and she helped me figure out how much I needed and quoted a very reasonable price and told me I could get it delivered in half an hour! Mac was soon in my driveway with a truckload of mulch. He drove that truck right up to my flower bed and dumped it right where I needed it.

I'm born and raised here, so I've known about AJ's for probably the last 30 years or more, but have never worked with them until now. They are awesome to work with. When you call them, you don't get a recording. They answer the phones and provide great insight and advice for the project.

AJ will forever be my place and will always be the first place i recommend. I have begged my husband for years to fill an area in my garden with river rock. He was able to do that yesterday with the help of AJ's!

Six to eight inches of good material over loosened ground is enough for shrubs and perennials. Trees want the root flare at the original grade, so those still get planted into the ground.

Yes, from the Gastonia yard. Mulch, straw, topsoil, conditioner and stone all go out that way.
