Bulk mulch by the yard, not the bag
Forty bags of mulch from a big box store is roughly one scoop off our loader, and it costs more. Tell us the bed size and we will work out the yards.
How much you actually need
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Spread three inches deep, that covers about 108 square feet, so a bed 10 feet by 10 feet takes a yard with a little left over. Two inches is the thinnest layer that will still hold moisture and hold weeds down through a Piedmont summer, and four inches is as deep as you want to go against a trunk.
Most homeowners who call us are somewhere between two and four yards. A full size pickup with a six and a half foot bed carries about two yards without squatting on the springs. Past that it is cheaper and faster to let the truck bring it.

What we keep in the bays
Double ground hardwood is the workhorse. It knits together, stays where you put it on a slope, and darkens down to a deep brown after the first few rains. Dyed black and dyed brown hold color longer and read cleaner against a brick house, which is most of Gastonia.
Pine bark nuggets and pine bark mini nuggets are the choice for beds you do not want to redo every spring, because they break down slower than shredded hardwood. Pine straw is a separate product and it has its own page.

Pickup or delivery
The yard is at 1401 East Ozark Avenue. Back a truck or a trailer under the loader and you are gone in a few minutes. We are open Monday through Friday from 8 to 4 and Saturday from 8 to 2.
For delivery, we need to know where the pile goes before the truck leaves. A driveway apron is the usual spot. If the truck can reach the bed itself without tearing up the yard, the driver will put it closer, which saves you a lot of wheelbarrow trips.

Bagged mulch is usually two cubic feet a bag, so a cubic yard is thirteen and a half bags. Buying in bulk means no plastic to haul off and no trips back to the store.
Usually not. If the old layer is still two inches or more, rake it loose and top it with an inch or two. Piling fresh mulch on top of a thick old mat every year is how beds end up six inches deep and holding water against the foundation.
We sell by the scoop, so you can take half a yard in a small trailer if that is all a bed needs. Call the yard with the measurements and we will tell you what it takes.
